A couple in a blue Corsa was trapped on CCTV footage stealing a manhole cover in front of a business on Monument Road on Sunday afternoon.
“What is really upsetting, is that this couple came into our shop earlier the week and asked if they could paint the street number on the pavement. Later, the woman came into the shop, saying their car won’t start. We helped them to jump start their car as the battery was flat,” Sandra McGill of SoundXperience said.
“They have no regard for the potential deadly trap they have set for the unsuspecting public.” On the company’s CCTV footage one can see how the vehicle stops outside in front of the shop. The driver, a male, gets out of the car and into the passenger seat, where his female accomplice previously sat.
With the passenger door open, the two sit for a while before the male starts fiddling with the cover. He eventually picks up the cover, puts it on the back seat and they drive away.
The whole video, from when they arrive until they leave, is about six minutes long.
McGill said various other manhole covers had been stolen in the area recently.
