A burglar’s desperate escape was cut short on Wednesday when police cornered him in Mooifontein Cemetery.Norkem Park SAPS responded to a house break-in at a house on Caledon Street ext 4 at 12.20pm.
According to Capt Lesibane Molokomme, spokesman for Norkem Park SAPS, the officers arrived while the crime was in still in progress.
“They noticed suspicious movement in the house and jumped over the fence into the yard to investigate. The burglar bar from a window was cut off and was lying on the ground,” he said.
“When the suspect, who was still in the house, noticed the police presence, he jumped out of the house through the open window.”
He took off towards Tembisa but his attempt to escape was short-lived as he was cornered inside Mooifontein Cemetery. He was found in possession of three cell phones worth about R2 000, a bolt cutter and black school bag.
The owner confirmed that the cell phones belonged to her.
The suspect (19) will be charged with house break-in, theft and possession of stolen property.
In another incident on the same day at 2.40pm Norkem Park SAPS arrested a male suspect attempting to steal screw nuts from a trailer on Bergrivier Street in Chloorkop.
The suspect (21) will face a charge of attempted theft.
