According to the SAPS provincial spokesperson, Captain Pinky Tsinyane, police officers followed up on information regarding the suspects. The information led the officers to the corner of Olifantsfontein and Brian Mazibuko streets in Tembisa.
“The suspects were found at a filling station, trying to run away from the police. The suspects were caught and searched by the officers. Four firearms were found in the suspects’ vehicle, a red Ford Laser,” she said.
Capt Tsinyane said it is believed the suspects were about to commit a business robbery in Mpumalanga.
“It will be established if the suspects are linked to other cases. Investigations are continuing. All firearms, gloves, cellular phones and the vehicle were confiscated,” she said.
According to Capt Tsinyane, the Johannesburg Flying Squad is keeping its promise to prevent crime in the communities.
“When everyone is asleep, we are the ones who make sure residents sleep peacefully. We make sure if any crime is committed, the suspects are put behind bars. People should take not that fighting crime is everybody’s responsibility. We appreciate residents who report illegal activities. Together we can make a difference, when we all take charge. We can all make South Africa a crime-free country,” read a statement from the Flying Squad.
All the suspects, aged between 38 and 47, are expected to appear in the Tembisa Magistrate’s Court soon, on charges of illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.
