NINETY years ago, on October 22, 1924, when Toastmasters founder, Dr Ralph C Smedley, held the first meeting in the basement of a YMCA in Santa Ana, California, USA, only a few people showed up.
Today, with membership exceeding 313 000 in more than 14 650 clubs in 126 countries, Toastmasters International continues to build on Smedley’s foundation of teaching public speaking and leadership skills.
Kempton Park Toastmasters Club celebrated 90 years of Toastmasters at its meeting on October 23 with speeches, evaluations and impromptu speaking. It is through times of enjoyment that people learn and the club definitely does have an enjoyable atmosphere, where members are encouraged to grow and develop the communication and leadership skills.
Toastmasters provides a supportive and positive learning experience in which members are empowered to develop communication and leadership skills, resulting in greater self-confidence and personal growth.
