TWO suspects were arrested in Woodmead earlier this morning following a shoot out on the N1 highway.
Col Lungelo Dlamini said a group of armed men robbed a tobacco truck, which led to a high speed chase and a shoot out, ending at the corner of Old Pretoria Road and Maxwell Drive in Woodmead.
“They took the driver and offloaded the cigarettes onto a Quantum taxi on a quiet street and got away in a VW Golf and the Quantum taxi. The driver reported the incident to police with a description of the vehicles and suspects,” Dlamini said.
“A flying squad patrol car spotted the suspects and gave chase. The men in the WV gold jumped out of the car and started shooting at the police. The police shot back,” said Dlamini.
He said the suspects also tried hijacking a Jeep during the shoot out. One ran onto the highway and was hit by a truck while the other was cornered by the police and arrested.
No-one was injured during the shoot out and the suspect who was hit by the truck was not seriously hurt, according to Dlamini.
A manhunt is underway for the suspects that got away in the Quantum taxi.
The police said the two suspects arrested were apparently left behind by their accomplices during the shoot out. The silver Golf GTI involved in the shootout had been recovered abandoned under a bridge.
