The arrests occurred after their operation which mainly focused on crime prevention and curbing illegal activities. The operation was conducted by EMPD members, specialised services, SAPS members and Home Affairs officials. The operation took place between 9am and 1pm.

The crackdown targeted Esangweni Section, Tembisa Plaza hawkers’ stalls and the Vusumuzi Informal Settlement.

More than 400 vehicles were stopped and searched while 600 pedestrians were frisked.

12 illegal gambling tables were destroyed and more than 600 counterfeit DVDs confiscated.

131 spot-fines were issued for various traffic violations.

All those who were arrested were detained at the Tembisa SAPS.

According to the EMPD’s spokesperson, Chief Superintendent Wilfred Kgasago, law enforcement agencies will periodically clampdown on identified problematic locations in the area.
