THAMI Tshabalala (30) from Tembisa was sentenced to life imprisonment and given an additional 20 years for murder and robbery.
The two sentences will run concurrently.
Tshabalala shot and killed a Lydia Street, Birchleigh North resident in April 2012.
Norkem Park SAPS spokesman, Capt Lesibana Molokomme, said when the police arrived on the scene, a man was fatally wounded in his upper body.
“It was later established that the victim was followed from the bank after he had withdrawn a large amount of cash. Tshabalala tried to rob the victim and that’s when he shot him,” explained Molokomme.
An intensive investigation was launched to hunt down the perpetrators.
“Tshabalala was later arrested and detained before appearing before the magistrate on November 29. He was found guilty on charges of robbery and murder,” said Molokomme.
Norkem Park SAPS station commander, Col Phuti Sekoma, was pleased with the outcome of the case.
“I am very happy with the sentence and urge residents to be more vigilant when withdrawing large amounts of cash from a bank. Alternatively, they can make cash transfers from the bank to avoid carrying large amounts of money,” he said.
