NORKEM Park Police appeal to stokvels (social clubs/societies) to stop withdrawing money in lump sums.
“At this time of the year we are dealing with a large number of cases of robberies emanating from these stokvels,” explained Norkem Park SAPS spokesman, Capt Lesibana Molokomme.
Molokomme said in most of the cases, after withdrawing the money, the member would be followed from the bank and then robbed.
“We appeal to these clubs to make transfers of their money into every member’s bank account instead of withdrawing money,” he said.
Molokomme also pointed out that they were aware of the fact that in some incidents cases of armed robbery were reported fraudulently.
“We do have suspicions that there are those who go the bank, withdraw the money and then pretend they have been robbed or organise people to come and pretend to be robbers.”
