POLICE have issued a warning to the community to be careful when withdrawing large sums of money at ATMs..

This comes after a woman was robbed of R38 000 after she withdrew the money at a West street FNB ATM in Kempton Park.

According to Capt Jehtro Mtshali, spokesperson for Kempton Park SAPS, the incident happened on December 12 at about 1.30pm after the victim had just withdrawn “club” or stokvel money.

She had placed the cash in a bag when she was confronted by the suspect, who allegedly pushed her and then grabbed the bag containing the money and ran away.

“The police have on numerous occasions issued warnings regarding people who withdraw large amounts of cash, especially those who are part of certain clubs or stokvels, which is divided among  the members during the festive season. In many cases people are usually watching them and follow them from the bank, and later rob the people of their hard earned money,” Mtshali said.

“We once again advise the community to deposit the money into members’ respective bank accounts to avoid such incidents occurring, as criminals target victims who withdraw such large amount over the festive season.”
