The baby was found by football players in an open space next to the Mehlaring Stadium. The players were practising at 6am when they found the baby.
According to Mr Sello Kekana, the player who made the discovery had gone to retrieve the ball when he saw something moving inside a plastic bag.
The discovery was made in May this year.
He told The Tembisan that he called his friend Mr Thokozani Hlatshwayo before inspecting the contents of the bag.
“I could not believe my eyes and froze for a moment. There was a white cloth wrapped around the baby’s neck and it was clear the person who dumped the baby had tried to strangle him. Luckily the baby was still alive,” he said.
The Tembisa SAPS Cluster’s communications director, Captain Manyadza Ralidzhivha, said the mother was recently arrested.
The arrest was made after the SAPS received information about the biological mother of the abandoned baby.
After collecting information from members of the community, the woman was taken in for questioning but refused to admit that she had dumped the child.
“DNA tests were conducted and we received the results last week. The tests linked the woman to the baby and she was arrested,” he said.
The mother is expected to appear in the Tembisa Magistrate’s Court soon.
