Mzimba gets life sentence
35-year-old Sipho Edwin Mzimba, from Ivory Park Extension 7, was sentenced to 24 years life imprisonment by the Palm Ridge High Court on Thursday last week.
He was sentenced to 24 years for attempted murder. He also received two life sentences for two counts of murder, 15 years for robbery, 15 years for attempted robbery and 15 years for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
According to the Ivory Park SAPS spokesperson, Warrant Officer Neldah Sekgobela, Mzimba was one of the masterminds behind business robberies and murders in Ivory Park Extension 7.
“On November 24, 2013, Mzimba attacked three victims who were about to leave work in Ivory Park, Extension 7. He shot the victims at close range. One of the victims died at the scene while the other two victims sustained bullet wounds and were taken to hospital,” said W/O Sekgobela.
She added that in the same area, Mzimba also attacked an Ethopian tuck shop owner and shot him.
“The victim died at the scene and the accused proceeded to the tuck shop and stole money, air time and cigarettes. On January 13, 2014, Mzimba was arrested by the Ivory Park SAPS and the dockets were investigated thoroughly by Detective Constable Poopedi of the Ivory Park SAPS. The cases were referred to the Palm Ridge High Court where he was sentenced by Judge Jordan,” she added.
Warrant Officer Sekgobela said the Ivory Park SAPS management is satisfied with the judgement. The management also congratulated Detective Constable Poopedi for the good work done.
“We are excited and proud of having members like Detective Constable Poopedi, who serve the community of Ivory Park with pride,” she said.
