A 53-year-old woman was killed by a stray bullet fired by fleeing robbers at Kempton Park Railway Station on Saturday afternoon.
Martha Sikhutshi Tshifularo was shot and killed when suspects fired random shots while fleeing an armed robbery scene. They had just stolen money and liquor from Cambridge Liquor Store at Kempstar Mall on Pretoria Road.
An eyewitness said about three men entered the shop at about 3pm while two stayed outside to keep guard.
“They told the cashiers and customers too look normal and continue to act as if nothing was going on. Two of them demanded money from the cashiers and one of them filled a big bag with expensive bottles of whiskey. They ran out of the shop towards the subway leading to the station,” the witness said.
According to Capt Jethro Mtshali, spokesman for Kempton Park SAPS, the suspects fled the scene, going through the subway into Kempton Railway Station and out onto H Lewis Road, where a getaway car was waiting.
“While running away, they fired shots at random and unfortunately one of them fatally wounded the woman,” Mtshali confirmed.
A case of murder and business robbery is being investigated.
