A high speed chase between metro police and three suspects on Tuesday last week came to an end when the suspects lost control of their vehicle and it overturned on Pretoria Road.
One of them suffered serious head injuries and another suspect has been linked to two other cases of robbery.
According to Capt Jethro Mtshali, spokesman for Kempton SAPS, the metro police noticed a red Ford Laser driving at high speed and skipping red traffic lights on Pretoria Road, going towards Kaalfontein at about 1pm.
“The EMPD chased the car but the suspects’ vehicle overturned, resulting in one of them sustaining serious head injuries,” Mtshali said.
It was later established that the three suspects had just robbed a foreign national-owned shop at gunpoint at the corner of North Rand Road and Bosch Street in Kempton. The shop, belonging to a Bangladesh national, was robbed of cash, cell phones, cigarettes and airtime.
The injured suspect has been admitted to hospital under police guard and the other suspects, Kensani Khoza and Lindo Mtungwa, have appeared in court on charges of business robbery.
Mtungwa has been linked to two previous cases, one of robbery in Tembisa and an armed robbery in Kempton last year June, for which he appeared in court on February 10. He was out on bail.
All suspects are in their late 40s.
