Appeal for eyewitnesses of accident

The couple’s black Tata Indigo went up in flames after the driver of a Hyundai i30 skipped a red light

A couple that was involved in a car accident on December 19 appeal to anyone who may have witnessed the crash to come forward.

The accident happened just before 8am at the corner of Atlas and Templehof roads (Checkers and Pick n Pay crossing). The black Tata Indigo station wagon they were driving in burned out completely.

“The driver of the other vehicle (a blue Hyundai i30) skipped the traffic light and rushed into the passenger side of our car, where I was sitting. The next thing I heard was my husband’s voice saying the car was burning,” Mrs Barnard, who was in the car with her husband, recalled.

Luckily none of them sustained any injuries but were stuck in the car because of the flames.

“We would like to thank everyone who assisted us in killing the flames with fire extinguishers. Because we were in such shock, we forgot completely about taking down any eyewitnesses’ names.”

The couple would appreciate it if anyone who saw how the accident occurred, specifically the guy who was travelling in a white Chev utility bakkie coming from Benoni to turn off into Checkers, make contact with them.

If anyone remembers anything about the accident, call 072-474-0684.
