Teenager killed crossing road

The Tembisa SAPS Cluster's communications director, Captain Manyadza Ralidzhivha, has reiterated his call to residents to use the pedestrian crossing bridge between Tswelopele and the Engen garage next to Clayville.

This plea came after a teenager was hit and killed by a vehicle while trying to cross the road shortly after 5pm on Saturday afternoon.

Eyewitnesses who were on the scene said even though there are traffic lights just metres from the bridge, motorists are always driving at a high speed when passing the area.

“I was just behind the the traffic light when the accident happened. Drivers must always follow the rules of the road because this is a busy place. There are a lot of people who cross the road to get to the garage and the nearby mall. We are appealing to motorists to follow the rules because they are always driving at a high speed when passing here,” said one of the eyewitnesses.

Capt Ralidzhivha, however, appealed to residents to always use the pedestrian crossing bridge when crossing the road.

“The bridge was built when it became apparent that it was dangerous for residents to cross the road. We also call on parents to not send their children to the shopping centre on their own. They need parental guidance when crossing the road. The only way for people to be safe when crossing the road is to used the pedestrian bridge,” he said.
