Stolen gun linked back to Wierdabrug

Police received a tip off about three men sitting on the railway lines at the Kempton station

An unlicensed gun stolen in Wierdabrug was found in the possession of three men on February 5.

According to Kempton SAPS spokesman, Capt Jethro Mtshali, the police received a tip off about three suspicious looking males sitting on the railway lines at Kempton Railway Station.

“At about 11am crime prevention members Const Calvin Madisha received a tip off from a member of the community about three suspicious males,” Mtshali said.

Police proceeded to the scene and indeed found the three men on the railway lines.

“Upon searching them, one of them was trying desperately to conceal something inside a plastic bag. When Const Madisha looked inside the bag, he found a rifle.”

One of the suspects ran away while the other two, aged 24 and 26, were arrested for being in possession of an unlicensed firearm.

It was discovered later that the firearm was stolen in last year May.

The new station commander of Kempton Park SAPS, Brig Bertha Kgoroba, thanked the member of the community for the information which led to the arrest of the suspects.

“This proves that if police and the community work together, crime can be prevented,” Kgorobe concluded.
