FIVE members of a gang that pulled off a R360 000 steel heist were arrested on Monday after being tracked down by the sector vehicle unit of Kempton SAPS.
Vusumuzi Kunene, Maxwell Sibanda ( a Zimbabwean national), Mbuyiseni Templeton Mtirara, Bulelani Malindi and Mjabuliseni Celekhulu, all aged between 30 and 40, appeared in Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday for business robbery.
Their case was provisionally withdrawn to allow the police to conduct further investigations.
According to police spokesman, Capt Jethro Mtshali, an unknown number of armed suspects overpowered the guards at a steel manufacturing company in Isando and took steel valued at about R360 000. The heist took place on February 8 at about 10pm.
“The sector managers for Isando received information regarding the incident and immediately started their investigations, which led them to the first five suspects,” Mtshali confirmed.
Three of them, who work at the steel company they allegedly robbed, were arrested at the premises and the other two were tracked down in Elandsfontein and Katlehong.
“The suspects led the police to a scrap metal yard on Monday where all the stolen goods were found.”
Police expect to make more arrests soon.
