Suspect wounded in the groin at burglary scene
A suspect was shot and another injured on Monday last week during a house breaking and theft incident on Essenwood Street in Birchleigh.
Norkem Park police spokesman, Capt Lesibana Molokomme, said at about 3pm, Norkem Park SAPS, with the help of security members from ADT and MML, arrested the two suspects while responding to a panic alarm.
“On arrival at the scene, they cornered the suspects in the yard. One suspect, after realising they were cornered, pulled out a firearm and pointed it towards the security officers. The officer, for fear of his life, shot him in the leg,” said Molokomme.
Molokomme added that the firearm had been taken for forensic tests with suspicions that it was fake.
The second suspect was arrested while trying to jump over a barbed wire fence and sustained injuries. Both suspects were taken to hospital for treatment under police guard.
The suspects were found in possession of two cell phones, a hand watch and other items.
Both suspects, aged 19 and 20, will appear in Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court after being discharged from hospital.
They will face charges of house breaking, theft, pointing of a fire arm and possession of an unlicensed firearm.
In another incident on the same day at about 11pm, security members from MML arrested a male suspect for attempted house breaking.
“The security officers were responding to a panic alarm on Armada Street, Van Riebeeck Park. The suspect (27) was arrested in the yard while trying to gain access to the house,” explained Molokomme.
