A 62-year-old father who allegedly killed his son (39) in Norkem Park on February 21, was granted R1 000 bail in Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday last week.
Sarel de Beer will again appear in court on April 1 and will be charged with the murder of his son, Jacques.
De Beer senior allegedly shot and killed his son at about 6pm at his (De Beer senior’s) home after an argument between the two.
Norkem Park police spokesman, Capt Lesibana Molokomme, said Sarel had shot Jacques in the stomach with his licensed firearm. He was certified dead on the scene.
Jacques’ sister-in-law, Linde Vischer, said the family was devastated and that it was a very difficult time for them. She said both Jacques’ mother Rita and his wife Lynette were struggling with the tragedy.
Jacques had one child (4) with Lynette. The child was with him on the day of the incident.
Jacques was a former football player and was described by family members as very athletic. Moroka Swallows Football Club was among the teams he played for.
Moroka Swallows FC’s spokesman, Sipho Xulu, said Jacques had played as a defender for the team for one season (1997/8).
“It’s a very unfortunate situation. We do not have details but on behalf of Moroka Swallows Football Club and the football fraternity as a whole we would like to extend our condolences to his family and friends and may his soul rest in peace,” said Xulu.
Jacques’ funeral service was on Monday at the Old Apostolic Church in Birch Acres.
