Another major drug bust was made at OR Tambo International Airport – this time the drugs were found in a plastic créche table.
The bust follows another three at the weekend in which drugs valued at R16 million were confiscated. Some of these drugs were found in jam tins.
In the latest incident 22.6kg of tik with an estimated street value of R6.7m was seized at OR Tambo International Airport on Monday, the SA Revenue Service said on Tuesday.
Marika Muller, SARS spokesman, said a woman arriving in Johannesburg from Dubai had been arrested.
The woman was identified for further checks and denied having any luggage. “Her ticket, however, indicated that she had checked in luggage. This was confirmed by messages on a cellphone in her hand luggage,” Muller said.
Airport staff found the luggage and handed it to Sars, whereupon a sniffer dog reacted positively when led to her luggage.
The luggage was searched and found to contain six small plastic créche tables (tables for small children),” Muller said.
“One of these was dismantled and found to contain a substance which has been confirmed as crystal methamphetamine (tik).”
The woman and her bags were handed to airport police.
