The Tembisa SAPS is looking for a 26-year-old man who is allegedly robbing job seekers by promising job opportunities in the South African Police Service.
According to the Tembisa SAPS Cluster’s communications director, Captain Manyadza Ralidzhivha, the suspect is posing as a colonel in the SAPS.
The suspect roams the area, collecting money from members of the community, saying they would be enlisted as job seekers within the SAPS.
“He told residents to pay a certain amount of money so that he can speed up their enlistment. In December last year, he took documents from people, saying they will be short-listed. This year, he told residents to pay money to purchase the uniform for training,” said Capt Ralidzhivha said.
It is alleged the suspect also promised residents that they would go to Cape Town for training.
One woman was told to pack her bags as she would be living soon. Since then, the suspect was not seen again.
Residents became suspicious when he no longer answered his phones.
“I am warning people to be aware of fly-by-night agents. In the SAPS, posts are advertised in the national papers. There is no one who can help you to be enlisted, except if you meet the required criteria. Report any person who is promising work through payment to the police,” said Capt Ralidzhivha.
