A car hijacked in Ivory Park earlier this month and allegedly used for robberies, was tracked down in Kempton Park Central Business District (CBD) On Tuesday just before noon by members of Johannesburg Flying Squad.
Three suspects were arrested at about 11.45am.
According to Capt Jethro Mtshali, spokesman for Kempton Park SAPS, flying squad officers, Const Tshepo Malebane and Capt Lionel Pillay, received information about a stolen silver VW Polo, which was reported stolen at Ivory Park SAPS.
“The officers traced the movement of the vehicle through its tracking device and established it was in Kempton. They drove from Joburg and cornered the suspects on Wolff Street,” Mtshali confirmed.
“Upon searching the vehicle, an unlicensed firearm was found in the suspects’ possession. It was also established that the vehicle was stolen during a hijacking in Ivory Park this month.”
Mtshali said the car might have been used in a number of incidents where victims were followed from a bank and robbed.
“The police will also investigate whether or not the suspects were involved in other robberies in Kempton the past two weeks.”
The suspects, aged 26, 29 and 30, now face charges of possession of suspected stolen goods and possession of an unlicensed firearm. The suspects are from Ivory Park, Winnie Mandela Informal Settlement and Thafeni in Tembisa.
“We hope the investigation into this case will lead to a breakthrough in some of the other robberies in Kempton. We would like to thank the flying squad for assisting us in making sure the suspects were arrested.”
