A man believed to be a taxi owner was gunned down in cold blood on Pomona Road on Monday afternoon.
Police are still unsure of the motive behind the killing of 30-year-old Themba Zungu. He was shot and killed in his silver Polo by suspects who had allegedly followed him in a white Mercedez- Benz AMG with blue lights.
Zungu was declared dead on the scene by paramedics after two bullets were fired into his chest at about 4.30pm.
The incident happened near Pomona Towing Services. Zungu was travelling with his brother, whose name is not known.
Kempton SAPS spokesman, Capt Jethro Mtshali, said two bags were stolen from the deceased’s car.
“The victim was apparently driving along Pomona Road, coming from the R21 direction, when he made a U-turn. He was allegedly being followed by the Merc, which stopped the victim just after he had made the U-turn,” Mtshali confirmed.
“One of three suspects in the Mercedes jumped out of the car and fired two shots into the deceased’s chest, fatally wounding him.”
According to witnesses, Zungu’s brother said they were both taxi owners and had come from OR Tambo International Arport to withdraw money.
“He said the suspects pulled up next to them and one man got out the car. Apparently all he said to the victim was: ‘I know you, I know you’, and then shot him,” the witness said.
The suspects sped off in the Mercedes with two bags, witnesses said.
