The baby was found by Mr Sello Kekana during a training session at an open ground next to the Mehlaring Grounds in May last year.
He was about to retrieve a ball when he noticed a plastic bag with something moving inside it. He stopped and opened the plastic bag, discovering the child inside the bag.
Together with other players, they went to the SAPS and a case of child abandonment was opened.
The SAPS later received information from residents which led police officers to the suspect. She was subsequently arrested.
According to the Tembisa SAPS acting police commissioner, Colonel Nthipe Boloka, blood was taken from the suspect for forensic testing.
The results came back positive that she was the mother of the child.
Khambule Eunice Ntombizonke (36 ) was sentenced to five years direct imprisonment.
