NINETY per cent of all burglaries happen in Norkem Park and Birch Acres.
This was revealed in a Norkem Park SAPS crime report at a recent community ward meeting organised by DA ward 16 councillor, Jaco Terblanche.
Norkem SAPS, Kempton SAPS and the metro police gave feedback on crime during the six months from August 2014 until January 2015.
Major Van Der Merwe of Norkem SAPS presented the crime report.
Some of the biggest concerns included burglaries, hijackings and motor vehicle theft.
He said areas such as Edleen, Van Riebeeck Park and Birchleigh had a high level of burglaries, which happened during the day and early evening.
“Van Riebeeck Park has a high level of hijackings, especially in the morning and early evening. Edleen’s main problem is motor vehicle theft,” Van der Merwe said.
Van Der Merwe said patrolling police officers, as well as private security companies, helped reduce crime levels, as their visibility played a role in criminals keeping a low profile.
“Recently, tracking companies helped in the arrest of four suspects in Van Riebeeck Park who were linked to various burglaries in the area,” Van der Merwe said.
Even though 11 burglars had been arrested in the past weeks, crime levels continued to increase.
Moreover, the station was also recently faced with the challenge of losing seven police members to the new Tembisa South Police Station, including some of its vehicles too.
