A second police officer who was wounded during a shootout on the N3 in Edenvale at the Modderfontein off-ramp earlier on Sunday has died.
A third officer as well as one of the suspects had been wounded.
The officers were apparently trying to stop a suspicious vehicle on the highway when suspects opened fire, killing one officer. A second officer wounded in the head was airlifted to Milpark Hospital but has since died.
Gauteng police have recovered a car believed to have been hijacked by the suspects involved in the shootout. Firearms were also recovered at the scene of the crime.
A section of the N3 south in Modderfontein had been blocked off completely for hours causing major traffic jams. The highway has since been reopened.
The suspects fled in a Mercedes Benz which was found abandoned not far from the scene. They apparently hijacked another vehicle, the police said.
