One police officer was killed on the scene while a second later died in hospital. A third officer as well as one suspect were wounded.

Kweza said the driver of the BMW refused to stop and members gave chase, only to find out there was a Honda following behind which was also going with the BMW. Members then were travelling between the two vehicles and the suspect from the BMW started shooting at the officers.”

Apparently more than 100 rounds were fired at the officers.

The Mercedes and firearms were recovered at the scene.

Police Minister Nathi Nhleko has condemned the shooting, and said South Africa could not stand by and watch as officers were killed daily.
