The incident took place at about 7am on Plein Street in Kempton Park.
The truck was recovered the next day in Germiston with its load missing. Three suspects were arrested at 1pm on Wednesday in Tembisa.
After the truck was hijacked, two of the hijackers’ accomplices forced the truck driver into their Ford Bantam bakkie and drove around Tembisa.
Soon after receiving a call that the stolen goods had been delivered, the kidnappers in the Ford Bantam drove to Bapsfontein where they told the truck driver to get out.
The vigilant truck driver was able to pinpoint to the metro police the place in Tembisa where he was taken to on the day of the hijacking.
“The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department’s Loss Control and Investigation Unit members could not believe their luck as two of the suspects who were in the Ford Bantam were recognised by the truck driver. The pair was with one other person. All three were arrested,” said the EMPD spokesperson, Chief Superintendent Wilfred Kgasago.
He said extensive investigations are underway and the suspects are being profiled as it is believed they could be responsible for other truck hijackings in and around Kempton Park.
The trio, aged 24, 38 and 42, were detained at the Tembisa Police Station and will appear in the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court soon.
