A 40-year-old man was shot and killed during a car hijacking that took place in Kaalfontein, Extension 4, over the weekend.
It is believed the victim died while being transported to the nearest emergency services in Ivory Park, Extension 2.
It is claimed he was hijacked while parked on a street in Kaalfontein.
According to the Ivory Park SAPS spokesperson, Warrant Officer Neldah Sekgobela, the victim was driving a VW Crafter company vehicle.
“He was approached by two armed suspects who demanded the vehicle’s key,” she said.
W/O Sekgobela said it is believed the victim fought with the suspects.
“The man was then shot and later died while he was transported in a private vehicle to paramedics at Ivory Park,” she said.
W/O Sekgobela said the VW Crafter was later recovered at Ivory Park, Extension 2.
A case of hijacking and murder was opened at the Ivory Park SAPS. The hijackers are still at large.
The SAPS provided the following safety tips in case of a hijacking:
- Accept that you are going to lose a valuable possession – your vehicle.
- Do not lose your composure and do not threaten or challenge the hijacker.
- Do exactly what the hijacker instructs you to do – surrender your vehicle and move away.
- Don’t reach for your purse or valuables. This may threaten the hijackers and you may get hurt. Leave everything in the vehicle.
