Local lass makes her mark
The Tembisan recently sat down with one of Tembisa’s up and coming stars.
Ms Wendy Mchunu was born in Tholeni, KwaZulu-Natal, and moved to Tembisa when she was a teenager.
She attended Zidikeni Secondary School and that is when she began modelling.
This young woman is not only into acting, but sees herself also excelling in the business world.
Wendy has landed several small roles in local soap operas like Zabalaza and Isibaya, to name but a few.
In 2014, she also had a role in Isidingo and the local drama Ihawu, which was aired on SABC 1.
“I have always loved acting and it has always been my passion, even when I was doing modelling,” said Wendy.
“I was always told there was no money in acting. I went to school and then studied Business Communications at the Tshwane University of Technology,” she said.
After completing her studies at TUT, she worked for a construction company before joining the banking industry.
While working in the business section of the bank, she developed an interest for business.
“I was working with huge accounts and I am a curious person, so I would ask the business people I was working with a lot of questions about their businesses and how they worked. I registered my own company when I was still at the bank. One of my clients, who had a construction company, gave me a break and that is when I decided to leave the banking industry and focus on my business full-time,” she said.
According to Wendy, once her business was up and running, she decided to go back to her first love and pursue acting. She completed a course in acting to harness her acting skills. She is now concentrating on getting more roles in the acting industry. Her advice for those who want to go into the acting industry is to study the craft first and to know what you are getting yourself into.
“Acting is not just a hobby, which is why I decided to do the acting course before going to auditions. All the roles I received were after I had finished my course,” she added.
Wendy said as much as she loves acting she encourages young people, especially women, to go into business. She said women should be prepared to enter those sectors that are male dominated, like the construction industry.
Her biggest role was in a movie called “Lady in red”, which will be aired in the coming months on Mzansi Magic.
