A glimpse into the new season of Voetspore

The Masai Mara, he said, was his favourite holiday destination of all time

SABC 2 documentary adventure Voetspore’s host, director, creator and producer, Johan Badenhorst, made a stop at Allen Park Old Age Home on Friday evening, where he gave the elderly a behind the scenes glimpse into the upcoming season.

Sarie Scheepers put together the fundraising event, which included live entertainment by singer Wickus and wine paired with interesting foods.

In the television series, Badenhorst and his friends travel throughout Africa, documenting their outdoor travel experiences and adventures.

The first Voetspore adventure was aired in 2000 and Badenhorst said viewers could look forward to season nine which would be on our screens in August.

Badenhorst showed never before seen footage from Voetspore in Africa’s Great Rift Valley, which is the ninth expedition.

“The three-month journey began in Mozambique and ended in Ethiopia. We visited nine countries and travelled 16 000km,” he explained.

The Great Rift Valley is a name given in the late 19th century by British explorer John Walter Gregory to the continuous geographic trench, about 6 000 km in length that runs from central Mozambique in South East Africa to northern Syria.

“I love travelling because there’s a surprise around every corner. I especially love Africa, its beauty, the cultures and the diversity.

He loved visiting Ethiopia and said the highlights of the expedition included visiting the scorching Dallol.

“This is the hottest place on earth, reaching a high of 58 degrees Celsius. We also visited the lowest point on land in Africa at around 150m below sea level, Lake Asaal.”

The Masai Mara, he said, was his favourite holiday destination of all time.

“It’s expensive but worth it. With the open planes you are able to get a good view of the wildlife and scenery,” he added.

“Africa is intoxicating, the people, the wildlife and the places. People think it’s a dangerous place but it’s so beautiful.”

Badenhorst said his wife sometimes travelled with him and that with the show they wanted to encourage families to travel.
