The incident took place at around 2am on Saturday last week.
According to the Rabie Ridge SAPS communications officer, Constable Jacob Nhlongo, the taxi driver was travelling with his friends when they came across three men walking along the street.
“The trio blocked the road and the drive asked to pass. One of the three men pulled out a knife and stabbed the vehicle’s tyre. They started to attack the driver and his friends. The friends managed to run away. The driver was stabbed in the chest and died,” he added.
Paramedics were called to the scene and the driver was declared dead at the scene.
Members from the Germiston Forensic and Pathology unit removed the body.
“A case of murder was opened. One suspect, aged 33, was arrested at a local tavern after investigations. He was identified by the victims who managed to escape. We urge local tavern owners to close early so that criminals cannot hide in the taverns,” he said.
