Credit was given to the Tembisa North SAPS’ Sergeant William Dlamini, who worked tirelessly to bring the serial rapist to book.
Malatji (28) was arrested while walking along a street in Winnie Mandela, after being identified by one of his victims who was raped in January 2012.
Sergeant Dlamini said the suspect raped women across the country, not just in Tembisa.
“He was targeting women walking alone in the evening or early in the morning. He overpowered the victims and then raped them. Blood samples was taken for forensic testing and it was established that he was linked to several rape incidents, house breaking and armed robbery,” said Sgt Dlamini.
According to Sgt Dlamini, Malatji was already sentenced to 10 years imprisonment for rape.
“He confessed to all the charges of rape and armed robbery. He was sentenced to 22 life imprisonment sentences, which would not run concurrently. He also received 331 years imprisonment for armed robbery, of which 55 years would not run concurrently with other charges. He also received a five year sentence for house breaking and theft,” he said.
Sgt Dlamini said Malatji is set to serve 615 years behind bars for the rapes, armed robbery, house breaking and theft.
Sgt Dlamini, who joined the Tembisa North SAPS in 2001, reminded criminals hiding in Tembisa that the SAPS does not lose hope when investigating crimes.
“We will arrest the perpetrators and make sure they serve time in prison for their crimes. I am still looking for Malatji’s accomplice, known as Raymond Leshilo, and I know I will get him. I am appealing for any information that could help lead to his arrest,” he said.
“I am happy about the good work Sgt Dlamini has done. He has achieved a high sentence. This shows he thoroughly investigated the case.
“I also thank all the witnesses who were eager to give evidence against Frans Malatji,” said the Tembisa North SAPS Acting Station Commander, Colonel Nthipe Boloka.
