NEARLY 21kg of crystal meth with a street value of R6.3-million was confiscated by the SA Revenue Service (SARS) at OR Tambo International Airport on Thursday.
SARS spokesman Luther Lebelo said the shipment arrived on a flight from Lagos and was said to contain hair pieces and food items.
“Five parcels of crystal meth were placed at the bottom of the shipment,” Lebelo said.
This latest bust followed other drug busts made at the airport earlier the week.
SARS customs also found one kilogram of heroin with a street value of about R200 000.
It was concealed in a false compartment of a box destined for Madagascar on Wednesday, last week.
On the same day, detector dog unit officers conducted routine inspections when a shipment from Maputo was intercepted.
“Nearly 15kg of Khat leaves valued at nearly R10 000 were found in the box,” Lebelo said.
A Sierra Leone citizen, who swallowed about 100 bullets containing cocaine, was arrested on Tuesday, last week.
He arrived from Sao Paulo and was intercepted on his way to Abidjan. The street value of the drugs was R287 700.
Lebelo said on May 1 detector dog unit officers intercepted one of the largest consignments of cannabis weighing 134kg with a street value of R187 600.
“The cargo was declared as bottles of wine. However, a narcotics dog helped discover 134 blocks of cannabis in a false compartment in the crates,” Labelo said.
