FOUR unlicensed taverns in Kempton Park CBD were shut down by the Ekurhuleni metro police on Friday night.
Chief Supt Wilfred Kgasago, metro police spokesman, said the operation started at 6pm and finished at midnight.
The metro police was assisted by officials from the Gauteng Liquor Board..
He said one of the taverns used a permit issued to an outlet in Brakpan. All the liquor in stock was confiscated.
The rest were found to be in contravention of their licences, utilising a restaurant-cum-liquor licence contrary to the stipulations of 80 per cent food and only 20 per cent liquor.
All four taverns were shut down pending the acquisition of an appropriate licence.
The outlets forced to close shop until they comply were Genesis, Evolution Bar, Salsa and Lesakeng. Genesis was instructed to remove a snooker table as they were unlicensed to operate as a leisure establishment.
Twelve metro police officers, led by a chief superintendent and three high-ranking officials from Gauteng Liquor Board, took part in the special operation.
All the closed taverns will be closely monitored, Kgasago said.
