A 25-year-old robber was caught on CCTV footage stealing a victim’s bank card on Friday evening.
According to Kempton police spokesperson Capt Jethro Mtshali, an alert security officer watched the incident unfold from CCTV camera footage installed by the ABSA ATM on Central Avenue in Kempton’s CBD.

“On Friday, May 22, at about 6.30pm, it is alleged the victim was withdrawing cash at the ABSA ATM when a man suddenly approached him from behind and pretended to be assisting him. The victim later noticed that his card was missing,” Mtshali said.
“Luckily, the security officer had already been monitoring the incident on the CCTV cameras and had already identified the suspect.”
The security officer managed to arrest the suspect and called the police, who then detained him.
He appeared in the Kempton Magistrate Court on Monday on a charge of theft.
“Police, yet again, urge the community to be alert when withdrawing cash from ATM’s and should not accept help from strangers, as some are criminals who just pretend to help.”
In other unrelated incidents, Kempton’s Crime Prevention Unit conducted a stop and search operation on Saturday in a few CBD areas, and arrested six suspects for possession of dagga.
All suspects, aged between 24 and 35, appeared in court on Monday.
