Drugs concealed in handbags confiscated at the airport

This method allowed for smugglers to attempt to bring in large quantities of drugs

Cocaine worth R2.8 million was discovered in false compartments of 10 handbags at OR Tambo International Aiport on Monday.

A Guyanese woman, arriving from Sao Paolo on her way to Maputo, was taken into custody.

South African Revenue Services (Sars) spokesperson, Luther Lebelo, said in a statement issued on Thursday the woman was handed over to the police after the 10kg of cocaine was found.

Sars said during the 2014/2015 financial year there had been eight incidents at OR Tambo where the modus operandi was using handbags to conceal narcotics. The weight of the seizures varied, with the lowest being 2.895kg and the highest 16.82kg.

This method allowed for smugglers to attempt to bring in large quantities, as opposed to swallowers and those using body wraps, it said.
