A school principal was robbed of R8 000 in cash by two women who identified themselves as representatives of the Department of Education.
The SAPS has since urged school officials to beware of persons approaching schools with donation offers.
The Tembisa SAPS spokesperson, Constable Zukiswa Mgijima, said school officials should be careful when dealing with unknown visitors who come to offer donations.
According to the principal, he was approached on May 21 by the women who claimed to be running a programme of purchasing computers for schools.
“They are women who take advantage of school teachers and principal in order to rob them of their belongings. People are urged to report any suspected criminals,” Constable Mgijima said.
The principal was told his school had been chosen for new computers. He was asked to drive to a store in Kempton Park to collect 15 laptops and 17 desktop computers.
While entering the principal’s car, one of the women asked the principal to fetch his tablet device as she had forgotten her device in her car, which was parked elsewhere.
While he was fetching his tablet device, the women allegedly searched his car and found money. The principal said the money was rent paid to him by tenants.
When the principal returned with his tablet device, the women said they could use their car to fetch the computers.
The group proceeded to where the women claimed their car was, only to discover there was no car.
The women pretended to phone their assistant who, they claimed, was elsewhere.
The principal was asked to fetch his car. When he returned, the women had fled the scene.
The principal proceeded to the Tembisa SAPS and opened a case of theft.
