Suspects operating a syndicate specialising in the hijacking and stealing of Volkswagen Polos in Gauteng were arrested on June 2.
The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) spokesperson, Chief Superintendent Wilfred Kgasago, said two of the suspects were arrested in Ivory Park.
The other suspects were arrested in Tembisa. “Four VW Polos and one VW Golf 1 were recovered. The suspects were arrested by members of the EMPD Housebreaking Unit.
“Two of the six suspects are from Soweto. Their four accomplices are residents of Tembisa,” he said.
Chief Supt Kgasago said one suspect was arrested and during questioning, he led officers to the other five suspects.
This resulted in the recovery of the stolen and hijacked vehicles, which were located in three different places.
“The suspects are aged between 23 to 28 years. All six were charged at the Tembisa SAPS for possession of stolen motor vehicles,” he said.
The suspects are expected to appear in the Tembisa Magistrate’s Court soon.
