Tembisa play heads to Grahamstown

The play is relevant to everyone because it talks about bullying, which happens on a daily basis.

Isiqhwaga, a Tembisa play directed by Simo Myeni, is heading to the Grahamstown National Arts Festival.

The cast of 12 actors will depart on June 29 to participate in the annual festival.

Ms Myeni said the cast rehearsed the play for two weeks.

“We are ready. This show is unique and it is not taken from any other show,” said Ms Myeni, who is the director.

According to Ms Myeni, the cast cannot wait to get to Grahamstown and deliver best performance.

“We have to put Tembisa on the map. Tembisa is known as a home for drama,” said one of the cast members, Happy Khafela.

The director said she has directed two plays before, which have never reached the festival.

“To have a play I directed going to Grahamstown translates to growth. I see myself growing as a director. I’ll be getting an opportunity to meet fellow directors who are more experienced and have been in the industry longer than I have,” said Ms Myeni.

Ms Myeni said when the play returns from Grahamstown, it may be taken to local theatres and schools.

Ms Myeni said the play is relevant to everyone because it talks about bullying, which happens on a daily basis.

“Bullying happens from schools to workplaces,” she said.

She said everyone turns a blind eye to the issue.

“We are merely holding up a mirror to the community to say look at what you are doing. It’s up to an individual to stop it,” said Ms Myeni.

“The cast appeals to the community to support them by coming to the preview on Monday, June 29,” said Happy Khafela.
