Runners celebrate the life and legacy of Egino van Vuuren

Nearly 90 members of Kempton Road Runners (KRR), along with family and friends, gathered on July 29 for a commemorative run to celebrate the life of long-time club member Egino van Vuuren.

The tribute began at Blue Elephants Valet in Harvest Place, where runners honoured a man who had been part of the club for more than 25 years, completed 14 Comrades Marathons and served on the committee for several years.

He also served as club captain for the past two years.

Known for his dedication and willingness to help, Van Vuuren regularly transported the club’s trailer and gazebo to races, ensuring runners had a place to gather afterwards.

He was also recognised for looking after fellow runners during training, often turning back to make sure everyone completed the route safely.

KRR chairperson Frits Klaver said the club chose to honour Van Vuuren by following the same route used by the Tigers training group, which meets every Monday and Wednesday at Harvest Place and with whom Van Vuuren trained regularly.

“Egino was the club captain of Kempton Road Runners and had been a member for more than 25 years.

“He was one of the hardest-working members of our committee. He never complained, never had a bad word to say and running was his life.

“He was caring, and everybody loved him. If you asked him to do something, he would do it without hesitation. We wanted to thank him for everything he meant to the club over the past 25 years. He helped us so much and was a brilliant person,” said Klaver.

Van Vuuren’s daughter, Zelda Mollentze, shared an emotional tribute, describing her father as not only her parent but also her best friend.

“My dad and I worked together and every morning when I arrived at work, there would be a cup of tea waiting for me on my desk.

“We shared so many memories. He loved camping, no matter the season, and he loved spending time with my children.

“My dad inspired not only his children and grandchildren but countless other people. Going to work will never be the same without him. The gap he leaves in my life is tremendously big,” she said.

The commemorative run was attended by members of the Tigers training group, KRR members, Van Vuuren’s daughter and grandchildren. Gideon Smuts offered words of comfort before leading those present in prayer.

Club members shared fond memories of Van Vuuren, recalling his trademark backpack, his two cellphones, one used to record his runs on Strava and the other for taking photographs, and the warm handshake with which he greeted everyone.

Although he was unsuccessful in securing an entry to the 2026 Comrades Marathon, Van Vuuren still completed the equivalent distance by joining members of Benoni Northerns for 51 laps around Bunny Park in Benoni.

According to the club, Van Vuuren’s commitment extended beyond running.

He lit the fires for monthly club braais, made coffee for fellow members and was always the first to help clean up afterwards. He also received the Tigers’ Shepherd’s Award at the club’s 2025 year-end function in recognition of his dedication and support for fellow runners.

Club members described Van Vuuren as a disciplined athlete, a gentleman and a committed Christian whose greatest passion was running.

They said he left a lasting impression through his kindness, humility and unwavering willingness to help others.

The club said Van Vuuren’s passing had left a significant void, particularly among committee members and the Tigers training group, where he was known for ensuring everyone returned safely from training runs.

“We will always remember Egino for his discipline, his willingness to help others and his never-give-up attitude. He was a true gentleman who will forever remain in the hearts of Kempton Road Runners,” the club said.
