A cellphone thief is facing robbery charges thanks to community members who helped chase him down.
The 30-year-old man was apprehended by the community last week Thursday after he stole a man’s cellphone at the corner of West Street and Central Avenue, in the Kempton CBD.
According to Kempton police spokesperson Capt Jethro Mtshali, the 36-year-old victim was walking in town at about noon, and chatting on his cellphone.
The suspect allegedly came out of nowhere and grabbed the victim’s cellphone, and ran away with it.
“Members of the community, who allegedly noticed the incident, then chased after the suspect. They managed to apprehend him and called the police,” Mtshali said.
