A suspected criminal died in a shack in Ivory Park, following a shootout with the police early on Monday morning.
The incident took place at around 5am after members of the Gauteng Flying Squad received a tip off about a truck that was stolen in Tembisa.
The SAPS was informed about the whereabouts of the stolen vehicle in Ivory Park.
“We were informed that someone was tampering with the vehicle’s tracking device,” said the Ivory Park SAPS station commander, Brigadier Frank Mthombeni.
Members of the community and the Ivory Park SAPS flooded the area.
“The two suspects saw the police arriving and tried to escape while shooting at the police. A shootout ensued and one suspect was wounded. His accomplice managed to flee the scene,” said Brig Mthombeni.
The deceased tried to hide inside a shack where his body was later found.
The Germiston Pathology and Forensic Unit transported the body to the government mortuary.
Brig Mthombeni said the SAPS is investigating a case of motor vehicle theft and attempted murder of the police officers.
