Members of the Olifantsfontein SAPS and the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) arrested two suspects during a joint stop-and-search operation.
The one-day operation was held in the Olifantsfontein area on Thursday last week.
The Olifantsfontein SAPS communications officer, Constable Mokete Serakwana, said the SAPS held the operation due to the high number of car hijackings and residential burglary in the area.
“One suspect was arrested for possession of suspected stolen property while another was arrested for possession of counterfeit cigarettes.
“The suspect found in possession of the stolen property tried to hide from the police but failed to escape. It is claimed he lied about the suspected stolen property by saying it belonged to his girlfriend, who lives with him.
“He was later detained at the Olifantsfontein SAPS. The 31-year-old suspect arrested for possession of counterfeit cigarettes had 36 packets of Remington, 16 packets of Chelsea and 10 packets of sharp cigarettes in his possession at the time of his arrest,” she said.
