A firearm, which could have been used in the armed robbery during which metro police officer Martiens Bann was shot dead, was recovered in a neighbour’s yard on Sunday afternoon.
This is according to Mark Pronk, vice-chairperson and commander of the CPF patrollers in Edleen.
He said they did random searches in the area of the crime scene on Sunday, looking for possible evidence, when the firearm was spotted.
Pronk, who also lives on Flamboyant Street where the shooting occurred, said: “I just came home from the shop when I heard a shot and guys came running down the street.”
“I immediately went into the house to get my firearm and notified the CPF patrollers. Within minutes we apprehended the first suspects on Green Avenue with the help of residents and Alpha Security.”
According to Pronk, the getaway vehicle, a silver Opel Corsa, was found on Aandblom Street. Two more suspects were arrested here.
The fifth suspect was apprehended in Van Riebeeck Park getting into another get-away vehicle.
The metro police, MML Security and Alpha Security also apprehended a suspect who was hiding in a veld near Klapper Street.
“If it wasn’t for all the people who helped in and around the community, we would not have apprehended the suspects as fast as we did. I take my hat off to all of the security companies, as well as the metro police and police for their work,” said Pronk.
