Second female drug mule nabbed at airport in days

She has been denied bail on Wednesday

AN alleged drug mule was denied bail in Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.

Roxana Quipos Rivas (44) was arrested at OR Tambo International Airport on Tuesday after drugs worth R1 million were found in a false compartment in her suitcase.

Rivas was en route to Maputo from Sao Paulo and had been travelling on a Peruvian issued passport.

She was denied bail as she did not have a fixed address in South Africa. The case was postponed to September 18 for further investigation.

Rivas was the second woman to be arrested for alleged drug smuggling at OR Tambo in less than a week. Sinikiwe De Sousa (42), who also travelled from Sao Paulo, was arrested on Saturday.

Police confiscated drugs estimated to be worth over R1.2 million allegedly hidden in books in her luggage. She will apply for bail on July 29.
