
Seven people were arrested during a speed law enforcement operation on Sunday.
The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) conducted the operation along the R21 and R562 bridge in Olifantsfontein.
The operation was conducted between 6am and 10am.
“The highest speed was recorded when a 53-year-old male driver in a BMW sedan was clocked doing 181 km/h. He claimed to be rushing to the airport. The second highest speed registered was by a 29-year-old driver also in a BMW sedan. The driver also claimed to be rushing to the airport,” said the EMPD’s Chief Superintendent Wilfred Kgasago.
Another three drivers were caught travelling at speeds between 170km/h and 165km/h.
“All those arrested were charged with reckless and negligent driving at the Olifantsfontein SAPS. They were all released after posting R1 000 bail each,” he said.
