A task team has been set up and a manhunt is underway in search of two male suspects responsible for a taxi shooting spree on Monday and Tuesday morning in Tembisa.
One female passenger was shot dead at Sangweni Taxi Rank during the shootout on Tuesday morning.
Acting Norkem Park SAPS spokesman and standby spokesman for Tembisa Cluster, W/O Mahlodi Langa, said the suspects had been identified and were known by police.
“I am confident that by the end of today the two will be found and arrested for murder and attempted murder,” he said.
Langa said the violence erupted on Monday morning at about 6.30am when a marshal was shot in the arm. A total of 55 bullets had been fired over the two-day violence period.
“Twenty-four cartridges were recovered on the scene. At 6.30am again on Tuesday morning, 31 cartridges were recovered when the same gunmen opened fire. Two men and two women were caught in the firing line,” explained Langa.
One of the women, aged 45, was shot in the chest and died on the scene, said Langa. The woman was on her way to Rosslyn in Pretoria where she was working for the National Prosecuting Authority.
The other three victims were shot in the stomach and arms respectively and are in hospital receiving treatment.
Langa said the violence was as a result of a dispute between Midrand Taxi Association (MITA) and Tembisa Taxi Association (TATA). “According to TATA, the two associations are fighting for the Alexandra route from Tembisa.”
Investigations are underway.
