UPDATE: Family of woman killed in Tembisa taxi violence shocked

The police will continue to monitor Esangweni Taxi Rank until the situation calms down.

News of the woman shot and killed during this morning’s shootout at Esangweni Taxi Rank in Tembisa has left her family in shock and disbelief.

“Taxi associations are fighting for a route from Alexandra to Midrand and from Midrand to Tembisa,” said Gauteng SAPS Provincial Major Mack Mngomezul.

“Yesterday an unknown white motor vehicle arrived at Esangweni Taxi Rank. Shots were fired and a queue marshal was shot and injured. The queue marshal was transported to hospital where he is still receiving medical treatment.

“This morning another unknown vehicle arrived at the same taxi rank and shots were fired. Four passengers boarding a taxi to Johannesburg were shot and one of the four, a 45-year-old woman from Emmangweni section, died at the scene. A case of murder and a case of attempted murder were opened,” said Major Mngomezulu.

A family member of the deceased told Tembisan they will address the media at a later stage.

Major Mngomezulu urged taxi associations to resolve disputes without violence. “The police will continue to monitor this taxi rank until the situation calms down. No arrests have been made,” he said.
