Ekurhuleni LGBTI Pride march at Germiston Lake on Saturday

The march is aimed at sparking debate and changing the mindset of homophobic individuals

THE Ekurhuleni Metro believes the Lesbian, Gay, Bi-Sexual, Transgender, and Intersexual (LGBTI) community is entitled to life, dignity and freedom from violence and discrimination.

Thus the Ekurhuleni LGBTI Pride will be held on Saturday at the Germiston Lake, Germiston, and will serve as a platform of expression for the Ekurhuleni LGBTI community.

The march will see close to 1 500 people proudly march down the streets of Ekurhuleni holding flags, banners and placards with informative messages about homosexuality.

The march, which is aimed at sparking the debate and changing the mindset of homophobic individuals, will also focus on complex health and social issues.

Issues such as HIV and AIDS, STIs and TB, human rights, access to justice, zero discrimination and stigmatisation, prevention of new HIV and TB infections, as well as treatment, care and support will all be on the agenda on the day.

“Following the incidents of correctional rape, discrimination and killing of LGBTI people done by uninformed and homophobic individuals, the march will be an eye-opener that will indicate that the LGBTI consists of mothers, fathers, daughters and sons of Ekurhuleni,” said Ekurhuleni spokesperson Themba Gadebe.

The march will commence at Golden Walk Mall, proceed to the taxi rank, the Ekurhuleni offices and then to Germiston Lake.

The march will be held on September 5, and will start at 9am and end at 5pm.
